Little Linford Wood copusing (Current and Ongoing Project)
If you go down to the woods today You're sure of a big surprise. But it won't be a teddy bears picnic you'll find there. You'll be more likely to meet members of the Lions Club of Milton Keynes Central engaged on their latest project, helping the Berks, Bucks and Oxen Wildlife Trust to manage Little Linford Wood. An ancient woodland just to the north of Milton Keynes.
When D.G. Wesley Mendonca took charge of 105a in July, 2009, he challenged the clubs to do something positive for the environment. The members of MKC took up the challenge, and invited Phil Sarre, the Warden in charge of Little Linford Wood to come and talk to them about the work of BBOWT. As a result of that meeting, the Lions of MKC have, since November, been helping to manage and restore the wood, which is a haven to many species of wildlife, including deer, foxes, a rare butterfly, and the native British dormouse.
Along the way, the Lions have learned skills such as Coppicing, scalloping, and cutting down trees safely. The project really fulfils the true meaning of Lionism for the club who are ‘Serving the community' in a ‘Spirit of fellowship' and giving their time and energy. So much more valuable than just writing a cheque. On Sunday 13th December, BBOWT showed their appreciation by treating the Lions working party to a genuine ‘Teddy bears picnic' in the form of mulled wine, mince pies, and roasted chestnuts in the wood. The members are looking forward to a long association with BBOWT during 2010, helping to provide a safe environment for the animals of Little Linford Wood to thrive, doing something worthwhile for the planet and getting a little healthy fresh air and exercise along the way. Altogether a thoroughly worthwhile and satisfying project.
